Dry Needling
Dry Needling is a treatment method in which needles of fine quality are utilized to ease pain by stimulating trigger points in the myofascial system. They are tender, firm nodules in the muscle because of tightness and stress. They can be found throughout the body. These trigger points may be painful to the touch and could cause pain to other body areas.
Trigger points may cause muscles “switch off” or reduce the force of contraction. Dry Needling is like acupuncture, but it is based on different theories from traditional Chinese medicine. Dry Needling on trigger spots has been demonstrated to trigger a response in the nerves, which causes the muscles to relax, which can cause less pain.
The needles we utilize are extremely smooth, and, as a result, they cause little or any pain when inserting needles. It is common to experience a “local twitch response” when needles are inserted into the trigger point, followed by rapid contracting of muscle. Often there is a brief “cramping” type sensation is experienced.
By reducing trigger points, patients can often move more effectively and with less pain, making rehabilitation easier and more effective.
